Carlila Anderson Hughes

Carlila Anderson Hughes passed unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on June 15th, 2026 at her home in Cheney, Washington. Carlila was born on December 16th, 1949, to Carl and Phyllis Anderson. She was the eldest of 6 children, born into a logging family, being raised between Western Montana and Eastern Washington. She raised her 4 children on ‘the farm’ in Cheney, WA. Carlila received a Bachelor's degree in Technology in 1994 and a Master's degree in Science in 1996. She famously worked as a bus driver for Cheney School District and became a familiar face to the children, many of whom still remember her today. She filled various roles around Cheney School District as well and later served as the records retention manager in the Dean's office at EWU, from where she joyfully retired in 2017 to pursue her passions: family, quilting, and the Tbird car club. Carlila loved to sew. She was a talented seamstress and award-winning quilter. She was a part of the Frayed Edges quilting group - who made many quilts for the community. She also made countless quilts for her family and friends. She loved her baby blue T-bird and was a member of the T-bird Club. Her schedule was often full of quilting events, car cruises, and classic car shows. Additionally, she enjoyed watching and taking pictures of the wildlife around her home. She put out hummingbird feeders and kitchen scraps for the deer and moose to enjoy. Anyone who knew Carlila knew how much she adored her family. She loved and doted on her husband & siblings. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the pride of her life. She hosted frequent lunches where any and all were welcome and loved like family. She is survived by her husband, Richard Hughes, and her siblings Carl, Donna, Gary, Terry, and Lee. Also by her children Wayne (Maria) Weber, Jeanelle (Scott) Palmer, Brian (Sherry) Weber, Randy (Spring) Weber, Michael (Lydia) Hughes, her busload of grand and great grandchildren, as well as a vast number of cousins, nieces, nephews and the countless people who were made into family through Carlilas’ unbound love. She was preceded in death by both of her parents - Carl and Phyllis, Grandma Vera, and Grandma Lilly. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and the community of Cheney, where she spent the majority of her life. She was known as a bright light, loving any who came across her path. She will be remembered for her passions, talent, hard work, laughter, and kindness. Carlila Anderson Hughes: wife, mother, sister, friend, aunt, grammie, and quilter extraordinaire. We love you Grammie - with a bushel and a peck and a hug around your neck. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2536 N 6th St, Cheney, WA 99004, July 18th at 11am. There will be a potluck reception to follow. If you would like to bring a dish to share, it would be greatly appreciated, but most of all, we look forward to celebrating the memory of Carlila together.
